If you are considering areola tattooing as a last step of breast reconstruction, you likely have many questions about what to expect before, during and after your procedure. We want to make sure you feel confident and informed about your procedure.
Here, you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about areola tattooing:
Q: Is it going to hurt?
A: The sensation to the breast skin is altered after a mastectomy so many patients don’t feel the tattooing procedure. Abbie will assess your skin sensation and if needed, a topical anesthetic will be applied. Please do not apply any creams prior to the tattoo.
Q: Do I really need a NAC tattoo?
A: Every patient is different, but 100% of patients whom I have tattooed in the past are glad that they did it! The nipple and areola is such a defining part of the breast anatomy, it’s amazing the difference the tattoo makes!
Q: Will the tattoo fade?
A: Yes. The tattoo will go through an initial healing/ fading process over the first 6-8 weeks after the first visit. The touch-up tattoo will darken and/ or saturate the skin more. Detail work will be done as well (re-defining the nipple, adding Montgomery glands if desired).
Q: Will I need touch-ups and how often?
A: Depending on your skin type and the color of the tattoo (lighter pigments fade more readily) you will likely need a touch up tattoo every 6-8 years (sometimes sooner).
Q: Will my insurance pay for the nipple and areola tattoo?
A: As a PA and Body Art Practitioner, Abbie can not contract with insurance companies so payment for the tattoos is out-of- pocket. Many insurance companies will reimburse you for the cost of the tattoo. Every insurance company and plan is different so we recommend you reach out to your insurer prior to scheduling your consultation to see what is required. We will provide a receipt of payment for service as well as a procedure note and letter of support.
