The benefits of a 3-Dimensional tattoo

We can create a 3-dimensional picture which gives the illusion of projection without the need for nipple reconstruction.  We mix a color that is complementary to your skin tone (or native areola if unilateral) and select an areola size to match the size of your breast (or native areola if unilateral).

We can provide great results with nipple reconstruction as well.  The 3-D tattoo helps define the reconstructed nipple and adds dimension (since most reconstructed nipples shrink).

Montgomery Glands can be added to give great texture to the tattoo if desired.

Consultation

Every tattoo starts with a virtual assessment.  During this half-hour consultation, Abbie will take a thorough medical/ surgical history, learn about you and your reconstructive goals, describe the process, and answer any questions you may have.   After the consultation, the tattoos may be booked.  You will have 2 sessions:  the initial tattoo (1.5-2.5 hours) and a touch-up tattoo after 6 weeks (30 minutes) to fine-tune the tattoo(s).

Preparing for Your Tattoo

  • Tattoos are performed at least 3 months after your last surgery. Be sure that you are not considering any further revisions.
  • Tattoos are performed at least 6 months after the completion of radiation.
  • Please do not smoke for 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after the tattoo.
  • It is important that you are not tanned- it is best to match skin tone that is not tanned.
  • Exfoliate the breast area daily for 2 days prior to the procedure.
  • Do not take Aspirin or Ibuprofen for 2 days prior to the procedure (consult your doctor if you take Aspirin for medical reasons).
  • Minimize alcohol intake for 2 days prior to the procedure.
  • Be aware that the Red Cross does not accept donation of blood for 1 year after a tattoo procedure.
  • Plan your tattoo so you can avoid swimming for 2 weeks after the procedure

The Tattoo Procedure

  • You will be greeted in the reception area and welcomed into to tattoo treatment room
  • We will review the information from your consultation, discuss the risks of the procedure and obtain informed consent.
  • We will discuss pigmentation options and select the best color for your skin tone
  • We will discuss areola size and the skin will be marked for your approval.
  • Your skin will be tested for sensation and if needed, we will apply some topical anesthetic.
  • The tattoo will be performed with soft music in the background
  • The tattoo color intensity will be significantly sharper and darker immediately after the procedure. The color will become softer and lighter by up to 40% as the skin heals.

After Care

  • A clear, waterproof dressing will be applied
  • Keep this dressing on for 7 days
    • If you experience fluid buildup (like a blister) under the plastic dressing, you may remove the plastic dressing, pat dry and apply a fresh dressing (provided at the end of the procedure)
  • Remove the dressing on day 7 and you may get the tattoo wet in the shower.
  • Apply your normal daily moisturizer to the skin daily after day 7
  • Avoid sun exposure. Apply sunscreen to tattoos even under clothing/ bathing suits for the first month if you are going out in the sun.
  • If you experience any redness, swelling, fever, nausea or fatigue, please call Abbie and/ or your surgeon’s office

Navigating Health insurance

Unfortunately, as a physician assistant, Abbie cannot contract with health insurance companies.  For this reason, payments are made upfront and you may submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.  Some insurance companies fully reimburse, some partially reimburse, and some do not reimburse.   We recommend you speak to a client representative prior to the tattoo to clarify your plan’s policy.
